About the Murray Cod

The mighty Murray Cod is one of Australia’s most iconic freshwater species. Not only are they a true legend of the inland rivers, these incredible fish can live for up to 50 years and grow to over a metre long! This makes them the largest exclusively freshwater fish in Australia. Once abundant throughout the Murray-Darling Basin, their numbers have plummeted due to overfishing, habitat destruction, water extraction, and river regulation.

Today, the Murray Cod is listed as a vulnerable species, and its survival depends on restoring healthy river systems and protecting critical breeding habitats.
